Choosing the Right Medicare Supplement Plan
Which Medicare Supplement Plan Is Best?
One of the most common questions people ask is:
“Which Medicare Supplement plan is the best?”
The truth is — there isn’t one single plan that’s best for everyone. The right choice depends on your health needs, budget, and how often you expect to use medical services.
That said, the three most popular Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are:
Let’s look at how they compare.
Medicare Supplement Plan F
Plan F used to be considered the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plan because it covered virtually all out-of-pocket Medicare costs.
However:
- If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you are not eligible to enroll in Plan F.
- Only individuals eligible for Medicare before that date may keep or enroll in this plan.
While some beneficiaries still have Plan F, we generally do not recommend it due to higher premiums and historically larger rate increases compared to other options.
Medicare Supplement Plan G
For many people, Plan G is the most balanced and popular choice today.
Plan G provides nearly identical coverage to Plan F, with only one difference:
You pay the annual Medicare Part B deductible yourself.
After that deductible is met, Plan G typically covers approved Medicare expenses with little to no additional out-of-pocket costs.
Plan G is often ideal for individuals who:
✅ Want predictable healthcare costs
✅ Prefer minimal bills or surprises
✅ Value comprehensive coverage and flexibility
✅ Want nationwide provider access with no networks
Because of its strong coverage and long-term value, Plan G is often our starting recommendation.
Medicare Supplement Plan N
Plan N can be an excellent option for healthier individuals who don’t visit the doctor frequently.
With Plan N:
- Monthly premiums are typically lower
- Small copays may apply for doctor or emergency room visits
- Excess charges may apply in certain situations
If you’re comfortable with occasional copays in exchange for lower monthly premiums, Plan N may help reduce overall costs.

So… Which Plan Should You Choose?
A good rule of thumb:
- Start by comparing Plan G
- If you’re very healthy and want lower premiums, evaluate Plan N
- Plan F is generally only considered for those already eligible and currently enrolled
The best decision comes from reviewing your personal situation — not just choosing the most advertised option.
