Medicare Advantage Enrollment Rules and Deadlines
Medicare Advantage plans don’t allow enrollment year-round for most people. Instead, Medicare sets specific enrollment periods that determine when you can join, switch, or leave a Medicare Advantage plan.
Understanding these timelines is extremely important — missing an enrollment window could mean waiting months before making a change.
Medicare Advantage enrollment opportunities fall into two main categories:
- Standard Enrollment Periods
- Special Election Periods (SEPs)

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period is your first opportunity to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
This is a 7-month window that includes:
- 3 months before your Medicare eligibility
- Your eligibility month
- 3 months after
Most commonly, this begins when your Medicare Part B becomes effective.
Go to the Initial Enrollment Period Calculator to see when yours is!
During this time, you can:
✅ Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan
✅ Choose a plan with prescription drug coverage
✅ Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage
Coverage typically begins the month your Medicare benefits start or the following month depending on when enrollment is completed.
Annual Election Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7
The Annual Election Period (AEP) is the most important Medicare enrollment window each year.
This is when most beneficiaries review and change their coverage for the upcoming year.
During AEP, you can:
- Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage
- Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
- Add or change prescription drug coverage
- Although new plan details are released on October 1, enrollments cannot be submitted until October 15.
✅ All changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year.
If you switch Medicare Advantage plans, you do not need to cancel your old plan. Enrollment into the new plan automatically replaces your existing coverage.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
January 1 – March 31
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period applies only to individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
During this period, you may make one change:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
- Enroll in a Medicare Supplement and Part D prescription drug plan
Your new coverage begins on the first day of the following month after enrollment.
Example:
If you submit a change in January, your new plan starts February 1.
Important: You can only use this enrollment period once per year.

Special Election Periods (SEPs)
Special Election Periods allow you to make Medicare Advantage changes outside of normal enrollment windows when certain life events occur.
Below are the most common situations.
Moving Outside Your Plan’s Service Area
Medicare Advantage plans are location-based.
If you move outside your current plan’s service area, you qualify for a Special Election Period.
For example:
- Moving within the same city → usually no change needed
- Moving to another state or coverage region → SEP triggered
This allows you to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan available in your new location without waiting for AEP.
Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) — “Extra Help”
Individuals who qualify for Low-Income Subsidy (Extra Help) receive assistance with prescription drug costs.
An additional benefit is expanded enrollment flexibility.
If you qualify for LIS, you may change your Medicare Advantage plan:
- Once during January – March
- Once during April – June
- Once during July – September
This provides up to three additional opportunities each year to adjust coverage.
Why Reviewing Your Plan Each Year Matters
Medicare Advantage plans can change annually, including:
- Provider networks
- Prescription drug formularies
- Co-pays and benefits
- Maximum out-of-pocket limits
Even if your plan worked well this year, it may not be the best option next year.
Reviewing your coverage during enrollment periods helps ensure you’re not overpaying or losing access to preferred doctors or medications.
